Architecture
Culture in Salta
Salta's architecture is rich in styles that dazzle the visitor and show its historical importance and the constant growth of the province, which from the creation of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata at the end of the 18th century, received various influences that are reflected in all spheres of culture.
Arch. Mario Lazarovich explains that until the beginning of the Viceroyalty, architecture was in charge of builders, military builders, and religious, but "in all of them it was the result of empiricism and peninsular transculturation embodied in this region." Likewise, he highlights the use of local materials such as stone, adobe and wood, which give special characteristics to the constructions "with a certain influence of the Andean colonial architecture of Upper Peru." Depending on the influence, patios, wooden balconies, exposed roofs and majolica appeared.
The Historical Cabildo de Salta is a sample of public colonial architecture and is characterized by its recovas. Although one of its parts was removed, it is one of the few almost complete Cabildos in Argentina and would form the origin of the porticoed square in Salta, unique in the country”. Outside the public sphere, the Casa de Arias Rengel, Casa de Hernández and Casa Uriburu stand out as domestic colonial architecture.
The professional indicates that the few examples of religious colonial architecture include the San Bernardo Convent, whose chapel began to be built in 1723, and the dome and nave of the San Francisco Church.
The rural mansions will follow the colonial line in the 19th century, thus in the 20th century the Craft Market is incorporated into the urban fabric. The arrival of immigration, especially Italians, initiated a change in the architectural style.
"The end of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th found Salta in a construction development as large and dizzying as it had never been before and this produced an urban expansion," says Lazarovich. This style known as Academic with Italian influence, gave rise to facades and construction of buildings within religious architecture, among which the Cathedral, San Francisco and La Viña churches stand out.
