In Salta there is a place that is a paradise. In El Jardín, at every step the vegetation amazes, besides it is possible to discover an enormous quantity of birds; it is the ideal place to enjoy nature in its maximum expression.

Historical outline

It is a town in the Department of La Candelaria, 241 km (2hs 33min) from Salta. According to the locals, El Jardín arose between 1890 and 1910; according to historical data the inhabitants descend from the Choromoros Indians, a tribe that originated in the neighboring province of Tucumán. Its name is due to the large number of amancay ¬ores that adorned the wooded mountain range.

A picturesque town in Salta

It has small streets as if stopped in time, you can visit the main square Manuel Belgrano and the church dedicated to the Virgen de la Merced, built by the Jesuits who inhabited the area. Around the square there are beautiful mansions from the 19th century.

Gaucho Trail Circuit

El Jardín is part of this tourist circuit integrated by nine municipalities of Salta, where you can enjoy experiences in natural and cultural spaces such as bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, rural tourism, sport fishing, cycling, sports and adventure tourism, visits to pre-Hispanic archaeological ruins, historical monuments, popular and religious festivals.

Regional gastronomy

It is possible to taste the regional gastronomy with exquisite authentic dishes such as empanadas, tamales and humitas and the popular "guatia" as well as regional sweets made with local products.

The "guatia"

This unmissable and curious delicacy has been prepared since ancient times in the area, generally to accompany celebrations such as patron saint festivals or folkloric festivals. The soft parts of the meat are used, which are marinated and placed in clay ovens. In the old days, a trench was dug in the ground, the meat wrapped in leather was placed on the fathoms and covered with earth, with a cooking time of 10 to 12 hours. It is important to serve it hot and accompanied by bread and a delicious wine from Salta.

Guatia Festival

At the end of March, El Jardín receives a large number of people from different places to be part of the festival that summons renowned national values. The whole festival is accompanied by the exquisite regional gastronomy; gaucho skills are also performed during the festival days.

Patron Saint Festivities

In September, the patron saint festival is held in honor of the Virgen de la Merced, with a procession of images through the streets of the town and a civic parade with numerous forts from Salta and Tucumán.

The Galleries

In this sector of the Provincial Route N° 6 you can travel through a wild scenery in 4x4 vehicles, by bicycle or trekking in different sections to enjoy the natural beauty of the place.

Hiking and mountain biking

El Jardín has different places to do activities in contact with nature. You can also reach the Virgen de la Montaña, where there is a beautiful natural waterfall and its landscapes. The Municipal camping has spaces for different recreational activities. In the neighboring Paraje El Espinal you can enjoy beautiful landscapes, wooded hills, abundant flora and fauna, and also exotic animals.
