In Guachipas you can see one of the most important archaeological treasures in America, where the Diaguita-Calchaquí way of life and culture have been captured in each of its eaves. The charm of its old colonial-style mansions around the square, with large, fresh trees and its church, give an attractive setting to the place.

It is located 100 km from the capital of Salta (1 h 30 min), going along National Route No. 68 and then entering (on the left) at the municipality of La Viña, via Provincial Route No. 6.

Guachipas is a “magical place” in Salta, as it has one of the most important archaeological treasures in the country. Furthermore, it is one of the most impressive places in the city province: the Quebrada de las Conchas and its strange formations such as the Amphitheater and the Devil's Throat make it one of the most visited attractions.

Guachipas, a Magical Place

The town is part of the “Magical Places” Program, an initiative of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Salta within the framework of the Sustainable Tourism Development Program (IDB Loan 2835/OC-AR).

Immaculate Conception Church

According to annual letters, in 1610 the first Guachipas chapel was created in Santa Elena. It was a Jesuit movement, with the aim of evangelizing the natives of Guachipas of the Calchaquí Valleys. Some time later, said chapel was destroyed by fire due to a Calchaco uprising.

Rock Art Interpretation Center – Tourism Office of the municipality of Guachipas

It is located in front of the main square of the town and has a dynamic and illustrative shape that shows all the history related to the archaeological site of the Las Juntas area.

Its function is to rescue, preserve and add tourist value to one of the main attractions of Guachipas, and the site of the highest archaeological hierarchy in the Lerma Valley.

The tourist office operates there, where the informants/guides are located, to provide basic information to visitors.


Painted Caves of Parajes Las Juntas

The Guachipas cave paintings were declared National hystoric monument. The Cerro Cuevas Pintadas is made up of more than 40 eaves, where the ancestors left drawings and abstract shapes. The predominant motifs are camelids and "shield men", which are anthropomorphic figures of a great variety of shapes, colors and styles. In the eaves there are scenes and characters from everyday life, religious ceremonies and animals such as suris, jaguars, birds, insects and llamas. The journey to the top of the hill, discovering this treasure, is an unmissable activity.

Quebrada de las Conchas

Located 140 km from the city of Salta (2 hours), it includes part of the departments of La Viña, Guachipas and Cafayate, and belongs to the Chaco Seco and Monte de Sierras y Bolsones eco-region. This ravine is an area of great scenic beauty with very striking rock formations due to their reddish colors. In 1995 it was declared a Natural Reserve, with an area of 25,784 hectares, in order to protect the curious geological formations and high walls of singular landscape value, as well as an important paleontological site. You can take incredible walks in the middle of multicolored mountains and through its imposing rock formations such as the Amphitheater and the Devil's Throat, which surprise all visitors.

This is one of the most sought after paths by athletes from all over the world. The incredible landscapes of National Route No. 68 and the possibility of combining it with visits to neighboring provinces, make of this circuit, one of the most outstanding in Argentina.

Gaucho Trail Circuit

This tourist circuit made up of 10 Salta municipalities, including Guachipas, was an old road of the Guachipas-Diaguitas, which later became Provincial Route No. 6. It is currently part of the Gaucho Trail, which allows you to enjoy experiences in natural and cultural spaces, such as bird watching, walks, horseback riding, rural tourism, cycling, sports and adventure tourism, visits to archaeological sites, historical monuments, popular and religious festivals. Contact with the gaucho culture is essential to make the trip an unforgettable experience.

Alemanía
This picturesque place located 115 km from the city of Salta, is located by going along National Route No. 68, km 81. To enter you have to cross a railway bridge over the river and on the left is the main street of the town with its houses. enfilades built in adobe, which responded to the needs and activities of the site, as it was the last stop of the railroad.

Alemanía is named after a German settler, who in 1631 asked for a part of that land in grant in Santiago del Estero, and the state granted him the Alemanía ranch.

Since 1914, the implementation of the branch began railway C13, which passed through there in those days. The inhabitants of the region have called it since time immemorial and until now Alemanía, to differentiate it from the European country. You can explore its small streets, its old train station, railway bridges and its houses on foot. The festival of its patron saint San José takes place on March 19 of each year.

They can also be done peacefully walks through the hills and visit the Alemanía waterfall. The journey requires about 6 or 7 hours (round trip to the area), and it is always suggested to be accompanied by authorized providers.
