Isla de Cañas

SELVA DE MONTAÑA

Isla de Cañas is a municipality in the department of Iruya, province of Salta (Argentina). It is located 610 meters above sea level, on the eastern slopes of the Sierra de Santa Victoria, 307 km from the capital of Salta.

The village

The town belongs to the community of native Kolla people of Finca Santiago. It is located at 610 meters above sea level, on the eastern slopes of the Sierra de Santa Victoria and 400 km from the capital of Salta. This municipality has a very different climate, a particular subtropical climate with an annual rainfall much higher than others in the area.

Kolla Culture

The Kolla culture is strongly associated to the high altitudes, the hills without vegetation, the breeding of sheep or llamas, the mud architecture. However, it is possible to find it in this people who managed to find a different habitat, with lush vegetation and low altitudes above sea level.
