La Poma

VALLES CALCHAQUIES

Winding ravines, velvety peaks, mountain ranges bristling with cacti and an increasingly blue sky lead the journey from Salta to La Poma. The Devil's Bridge, a volcano with two chimneys and Los Graneros Incaicos, a World Heritage Site, are some of the natural treasures of the town located over 3,000 meters above sea level.

A town stopped in time
La Poma is 194 km (3hs 45min) from Salta Capital. Walking the dirt streets of La Poma "Vieja" and seeing the simple typical houses of this small town, whose original constructions were practically devastated by an earthquake in 1930, is a must for visitors to the place.

Santa Bárbara Patron Saint's Day
On the fourth Sunday of November, La Poma dresses up to celebrate the festivities in honor of its patron saint, Santa Bárbara, protector of the faithful during storms.

Trout Festival
In January this festival is not to be missed. It gathers a large number of people who come to enjoy provincial and nationally renowned artists, as well as the different preparations of this exquisite delicacy, where there is no lack of empanadas, goat, locro, lamb baked in a clay oven and goat cheese. In addition, you can taste typical beverages of the area such as chicha.

Eulogia Tapia and the zamba "La Pomeña".
The town owns one of the most beautiful folk songs that Salta has given to the country and the world. The girl who inspired the poets Castilla and Leguizamón used to live in these lands and nowadays it is possible to see her taking her goats to graze in the middle of the immensity of the hills.

Local gastronomy
The trout is the specialty of this region since its meat has a unique flavor, thanks to the crystalline and pure waters of thaw that descend from the Acay and run through mountains and caverns. Not to be missed is the chanfaina criolla, an old recipe that uses blood and offal from goats and lamb. The kid goats and lamb baked in a clay oven, accompanied by beans, corn and Andean potatoes that characterize the artisan cuisine of the Pomeña are another unmissable dish.

The Inca Granaries
Built in a natural cave, the Graneros Incaicos de La Poma are one of the main vestiges of the Inca culture in Northwest Argentina, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, along with two other sites in Salta, which were part of the Qhapaq Ñan or Inca Trail. There are 25 circular and rectangular silos; they were mainly used to store corn. The mud installation is complex, since it contains the modern principles of ventilation and rodent protection that are still in force today. The site is located 500 meters from the road, protected by a fence and with good signage.

Los Gemelos Volcano
Two volcanoes are the guardians of the town of La Poma. An immense "black field" of pumice stone from past eruptions adorns the landscape and invites you to climb them. The pleasure of reaching the summit and being able to see all the beautiful panoramic view is an activity that cannot be missed in the place.

Devil's Bridge
This cavern is a very curious geological phenomenon worth seeing, containing stalactites of various shapes and sizes and where water flows inside. To tour the interior of this natural bridge and go spelunking is one of the most amazing tourist experiences for travelers. Since it is not a self-guided circuit, it is suggested to go through the place accompanied by agencies with guides and authorized providers.

High altitude trekking
It is possible to hike through these beautiful landscapes of the Calchaquí Valley, passing through La Poma and its incredible formations such as the Devil's Bridge and the subway caverns.

Abra del Acay Natural Monument
It is an incredible road pass that at almost 5,000 meters joins the Puna with the Calchaquí Valleys, a little more than 40 km north of the town of La Poma.

Mountain biking and 4x4 tours on National Route 40 and Abra del Acay.
For adrenaline and scenery lovers, these activities are not to be missed. From Salta you can go up the Quebrada del Toro to National Route 40 and then to the highest road pass in America, the "Abra del Acay" with its 5,000 meters of altitude. From here we start a descent towards the town of La Poma. On the way you can see some natural wonders such as the Devil's Bridge and traces of ancient cultures such as the granaries of the Inca.

Acay, Santa Bárbara and San Miguel snow-capped peaks
They are incredible massifs of more than 5,000 meters high, where the imposing landscape and what is observed during the ascent is something unforgettable; they are strategic points for the practice of mountaineering in the region. As it is not a self-guided circuit, it is suggested to go through the place accompanied by agencies with guides and authorized providers.

Calchaquí River
The Calchaquí River has its headwaters in the Nevado del Acay and it is in this area where you can find fresh trout for the delight of lovers of this species.
