Culture in Salta

In Salta we have an important network of museums whose main objective is to rescue, preserve, investigate and disseminate our cultural heritage.

You can visit, according to the preferences of each one, history, contemporary art, technology, science, ancestral customs, rural life, vines and wine, as well as unique experiences.
Those that can be visited touring the City of Salta are:


Güemes Museum
It is located in the heart of the city of Salta, in the building where the Royal Treasury of the Municipality of Salta del Tucumán functioned towards the end of the 18th century, and where Martín Miguel de Güemes lived together with his family. The house has ten rooms that cover the milestones in the life of the gaucho hero and the wars for independence. In the rooms, patios and galleries, the public goes back to the first years of his life, meets his family, admires the remarkable performance of the then young Martín Miguel in defending himself against the English invasions, the gaucho war, his work as governor de Salta and the ambush that ended his life, among other historical events. Throughout the tour, visitors will enjoy modern audiovisual resources and exhibition techniques that include stage effects, lighting and multimedia programs.  + info


High Mountain Archeology Museum - MAAM
The main function of the High Mountain Archeology Museum is to safeguard the archaeological find called Los Niños del Llullaillaco, which it achieves through a very modern cryopreservation system; and at the same time, study and disseminate it. Through the heritage that it preserves, it works to protect the ancestral culture, reinforcing the identity of the original peoples. +info


Salta Museum of Anthropology
The Museum of Anthropology of Salta, in addition to its educational and scientific mission, is the body in charge of executing current legislation referring to archaeological and paleontological heritage, as well as intervention on the granting of research permits , non-formal education, advice to different institutions, and rescue and dissemination of cultural heritage. +info


Contemporary Art Museum
It was inaugurated with the purpose of disseminating, educating, investigating and exhibiting contemporary artistic production. It is the center of actions related to contemporary visual arts and a nucleus to address the alternatives of exhibition, dissemination and teaching. +info


Museum of Fine Arts of Salta - Distinguished in Quality
The French-style building, from the beginning of the 20th century, has more than 1,000 m2 distributed over two floors and has been restored, expanded and adapted to its new function. The museum has 245 m2 of exhibition space for temporary exhibitions on the ground floor and 166 m2 on the first floor, for the permanent collection. It has a specialized library, auditorium, shop and bar. +info


Arias Rengel House Museum
​​​​​​​The Casa Arias Rengel Historical Monument was built in the mid-18th century by the Arias Rengel family, encomenderos of the time. On its upper floor, patios and galleries, it permanently exhibits the works of the collections, as well as traveling exhibitions of the Campomar Collection. +info


Historical Museum of the North
It is the best preserved Cabildo in the country. It has nine exhibition rooms along the two floors, where pieces and paintings are preserved. Among the most outstanding rooms are the Archeology room, which exhibits historical elements of the City of Salta, the room that exhibits objects belonging to General Martín Miguel de Güemes and the Sacred Art room with important pieces of wood. +info


Museum of the City "House of Hernandez"

Its construction dates from approximately 1780. It has two floors located in the style of the buildings of that time. On the ground floor it houses musical instruments and music players. Temporary exhibitions are held in the María Teresa Cadena de Hessling Room. There is also the Municipal Historical Archive and an interesting Library specialized in the History of General Martín Miguel de Güemes, History of Salta and authors from Salta. +info


Folk Museum "Pajarito Velarde"
This House-Museum works in a typical colonial construction, which is estimated to have been built at the end of 1700 and is distinguished by having a wooden window in one corner without an octave. In "Pueyrredón 106", those who became the most famous poets, musicians, composers, painters and artists met daily, who carried the name of Salta through the routes and stages of the country and the world. +info
 

Pajcha Museum of Ethnic American Art
​​​​​​​It has samples and collections of the artistic production of different cultures of Central and South America from pre-Columbian times to the present day. +info


​​​​​​​Museum of the Basilica San Francisco
Throughout the circuit, the history of the basilica and the convent, details of cultural aspects (such as sacred art), the archive, the library and the sacristy are told; also on Franciscan spirituality. The circuit ends at the church, where visitors learn about the history and architecture of the temple. Once a month there are nocturnal visits. +info
 

Monsignor Carlos Mariano Perez Cathedral Museum
​​​​​​​The museum is part of the Cathedral Basilica of Salta, located on Avenida Belgrano. It is part of the architectural ensemble of the Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace, forming a unit of great historical and artistic value. In 1992, the inauguration of the museum was achieved, a work initiated jointly between Monsignor Carlos Mariano Perez and Monsignor Raul Casado, both rest at the foot of the Camarín de la Virgen del Milagro in the Sanctuary of the Lord and Virgen del Milagro. +info 
 

Uriburu House Museum
Through the old house in which the Uriburu Museum works, it is possible to describe elements of the Salta society of the late colonial period. The Museum, founded in the 40's by Monsignor Miguel Ángel Vergara, exhibits pieces referring to the uses and customs of that time. In addition, it has an important library specialized in history, art and museology of the region. Some books on Salta history, colonial and modern architecture, copies on museology of the region, religious books, biographies and genealogies of Salta stand out. There are also 18th century manuscripts, old maps, chronicles from different eras and historical documents, such as the founding act of the city of Oran, among others. +info
 

Museum of Natural Sciences "Lic. Lic. Miguel A. Arra"
It is located on Calle Mendoza No. 2, on Parque San Martín, on the shores of the lake. It belongs to the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the National University of Salta.
The old museum building, inaugurated in 1915 under the name of "Centennial Pavilion", was recently declared a national historical monument.
The museum has a circuit that goes through nine rooms that allow you to get to know the flora and fauna of the region up close. It has a sector specially designed to raise awareness about threatened biodiversity, where species at risk due to the modification of the natural environment are shown.
The bodies of the animals that can be seen are preserved with the taxidermy technique. Visitors are drawn to an anaconda, a non-native snake that arrived with a historic flood of the Bermejo River in 1954 and is still on display today. There is also a herbarium, a mineral room and a bird area where you can discover curiosities and little-known aspects of local nature. +info

Tastil Site Museum

Pieces and objects belonging to the archaeological site located in the upper part of the hill, very close to the current town, are exhibited. A brief panorama of the environmental characteristics (geology, flora and fauna of the place), a map of the archaeological site and showcases with objects and panels of daily life and the social organization of its inhabitants, illustrate the visitor. +info

CACHI

Pio Pablo Diaz Archaeological Museum
It has one of the most representative collections in the entire Calchaquí Valley, due to its value in the scientific collection in which they have been rescued, duly documented and preserved. From the beginning it was a solid reference for Argentine and foreign researchers. +info

ROSARIO DE LA FRONTERA

Quinquela Martin School of Fine Arts Museum
It has sculptures, paintings, drawings and engravings by Argentine artists from the mid-20th century, such as Quinquela Martín, Noé Da Prato, Pablo Tenti, Luis Perlotti, Torcuato Tasso, Agustín Riganelli, Antonio Pujía, Medardo Pantoja, Santiago Chierico and others. +info

CAMPAMENTO VESPUCIO

Museum of Natural Sciences and Petroleum "Professor Rodolfo Parodi Bustos"​​​​​​​
Offers a glimpse of the evolutionary history of the planet, with collections of minerals and living organisms. It continues with samples of small and large mollusks that inhabited the seas during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras to reach the skeletal remains of large mammals, Glyptodonts, Stegomastodons, Megatheriums, among others. Within this context, you can enjoy a picturesque display of the animals that currently inhabit the area, made by artisans from the Wichi community. As a fundamental part of the oil history of the area, photographs and documents of the epic of the Spanish immigrant Don Francisco Xavier Tobar are exhibited, which led him to discover and extract oil.

Museum of Rural Life in Salta "Finca La Cruz"
It is found in the sub-Andean mountains, in a landscape of hills and immersed in lush vegetation. In its rooms you can see furniture and objects for domestic use from the beginning and the middle of the 19th century. It belonged to the stepfather of General Martín Miguel de Güemes, who used it sporadically as a barracks during the independence war.
