San Carlos is the cradle of artisans, where silence and history, the serenity of its people and the incredible scenery of the Calchaquí Valleys coexist.

San Carlos, a Magical Place
San Carlos, a town surrounded by mountains 197 km (3hs) from Salta and 4,000 meters above sea level, known as the "Villa of the 5 names" for its repeated and failed attempts to establish, between 1,551 and 1,641, a town that guarantees the Spanish domination by the tenacious resistance to the conquest of the Diaguita Calchaquíes. Its distinctive and magical value is its history, it is the oldest town in the Province of Salta and by a few votes lost being the place chosen for the foundation of the city of Salta, it is an ideal place to know the architectural influence of the colonial era in our land.

San Carlos Borromeo Church
It is one of the most beautiful churches in Salta, built in 1801 and is one of the largest in the Calchaquí Valley. The Patronal Festivity in honor of San Carlos Borromeo is held in November.

Holy Week in San Carlos
The celebration preserves traditions such as the Burning of Judas where giant dolls are prepared and lit at midnight on Good Friday. In addition, there is an emotional living Stations of the Cross in which the inhabitants of the town participate.

Vallisto Carnival
Every year in February, the Carnival Unburial takes place. You can share with the inhabitants of the town through the game with flour, paint, water, papel picado and participate in the famous "comadre" (a kind of "comadre"), gaucho skills and popular dances.

Jallpha Calchaquí Museum
The present building, of popular domestic style, was restored and enlarged to house the Archaeological and Historical Museum and the Cultural Center of San Carlos. It also has a multipurpose room, an exhibition room and two patios where different events are held.

The Wine Route
An icon of the Calchaquí Valleys are the high altitude wines. San Carlos does not escape this distinction and its most striking and charming feature is the highly artisanal production of pateros wines. Visiting the wineries you can learn about the most traditional way of making them.

Gastronomy of San Carlos
Around the square you can find small and picturesque bodegones where you can enjoy ancestral recipes of the most traditional dishes of the region. A wide variety of artisan beers with particular flavors have also been produced for some years now.

The Peasant Tourism Network
This type of tourism allows you to experience the daily life of the people of San Carlos, accompanying them in their work activities and learning about the culture and traditions that are maintained from generation to generation.

Flora and fauna
The colorful landscape of its mountains places this place among the favorites of those who visit the place, with its colors and shapes difficult to find in other parts of the planet. For bird lovers, Salta has unbeatable options since there are more than 650 species of birds, within this large number of species, the Calchaquí Valley has a very important place since almost 50% of the total number of species live there. The guanaco and the fox also stand out.

The Darsena
It is a water mirror located 3 km from San Carlos by National Route 40, to the north. Here you can practice canoeing in kayak and pejerrey fishing.

Los Sauces Dam
Located 12 km from San Carlos, it is an old construction of a water retaining wall on the Calchaquí River, not functioning, but with splendid landscapes and places to spend the day during the summer.

Adventure and mountain biking
Lovers of adventure and of the challenge of riding through difficult terrain find in San Carlos an ideal place to carry out this activity, accompanied by the majesty of its nature.

San Lucas
13 km from San Carlos, it has petroglyphs in its hills. It is a beautiful hamlet where figs and nuts abound, you can observe native flora and fauna and get a panoramic view of the entire valley.

El Barrial
Located 5 km from the town of San Carlos, it has farms where you can appreciate the main crop of the area such as bell pepper for paprika. The fields are delimited by old fences built with branches, which gives it a unique landscape. In this place you can get different seasonal fruits with which they elaborate regional sweets.

Peñas Blancas
Located on the banks of the Calchaquí River on the banks of National Route 40, in this place there are vestiges of ancestral dwellings and remains of an indigenous cemetery. It is important the presence of a natural pass between mountains, known as "El Cajoncillo".

Calchaquí River
Bed of a plentiful water stream that comes from the Nevado de Acay (Department of La Poma) and flows into the Cabra Corral Dam, on its banks there are lush carob trees and beaches with undulating sandy beaches.
