The city
San José de Metán is located on the side of National Route No. 9/34, 145 km (1h 40 min) from Salta capital. Located at an altitude of 858 meters above sea level, it enjoys a subtropical mountain climate with a dry season, with pleasant temperatures in all seasons. It is currently an active agricultural-livestock center.
Plaza Gral. San Martín
It is the main square, located in the center of the city and built in 1939, on land donated in 1929 by Mrs. Lastenia Vera de López. It presents large green spaces adorned with ornamental plants and flowers, providing a marked color.
It has a multipurpose area, a chess game and numerous children's games; You can also enjoy the dancing waters.
Señor del Milagro Church and San José Parish
The city has two must-see churches. The Señor del Milagro Parish that, after the earthquake of August 25, 1948, was consecrated to the Lord and Virgin of Milagro, although originally it was going to be the new temple for San José. Inside, the face of Jesus is captured in a mosaic, which appeared spontaneously on July 9, 2002, known as “Jesus of the Mosaic.”
The second, San José Parish, declared a Provincial Historical Monument. Its construction dates back to 1868. It is located in the historic center of the city, in the original location designated by Mr. Guillermo Sierra in 1859 for the creation of the city and the department.
Religious holidays
The patron saint festivities are celebrated on March 19 in honor of San José. The procession is carried out, which is complemented by the gaucho parade. The artisan and gastronomic fair is also held, and the traditional cantata to the patron saint.
During Holy Week, the Gaucho Via Crucis takes place, in which local parish priests, members of different gaucho forts and institutions of the environment and town in general participate. Through this celebration, the typical customs of this region are shown, involving those who visit it.
In the month of August they carry out solemn services in honor of the Lord and Virgin of the Miracle.
The Historic Center
It has architectural value of fundamental importance; From a cultural point of view, it presents characteristics of postcolonial and neo-Italian architecture. In this sector are the Plaza General Manuel Belgrano, the Popular Library "Marco Avellaneda", the Home for the Elderly "San José", the Birthplace of Federico Gauffín and the building of the current prison for Indicted Persons, former Municipal Council.
Birthplace of Federico Gauffin
This place is part of the historic center of San José de Metán. This classic Italian-style house of the chorizo type, today constitutes another cultural and tourist attraction of the city.
Federico Gauffin is considered one of the most relevant authors in this field. His works were "En Tierra de Magú Pela", "Alma Perdida" and "Los Dos Nidos".
"Federico Gauffin" Cultural and Institutional Center
It is an emblematic cultural place in honor of the writer, headquarters of the Municipal Tourism Office, the Gaucho Museum, the Bicentennial Historical Interpretation Center of the Liberating Deed of the South of Salta, the “Prof. Amelio Ronco Ceruti”, of the Padre José Mir Municipal Library, the Archaeological Museum, and the History of Metán and Railway History.
Gaucho Museum
The museum is located in the center of the city and is dedicated to revaluing gaucho culture in all its aspects: origins of the gaucho, the gaucho in independence; an interesting place to visit in the city.
Museum of Fine Arts "Professor Amelio Ronco Ceruti"

Yatasto Post
La Posta de Yatasto is a must-see near Metán. It is the meeting place between General Manuel Belgrano and General San Martín, during the period of the fight for the country's independence. Currently the Museum of Rural Life operates on this site. The part of the ranch that is preserved today was declared a National Historical Monument.
Old Metan
3 km from the city, is this small farming town, with soy and corn production. During the 19th century, it was the epicenter of agricultural production in the Northwest until the arrival of the Railway, which generated the Creation of the Villa La Estación Sector, the current capital of Metan. There is a monolith that commemorates the founding of the town and the Fort of Metán.
Camping - Municipal Spa
Located on the side of National Route No. 9/34, bordering to the north with the Río de las Conchas waterfront.
