Seclantás

VALLES CALCHAQUIES

It is a prodigal land of artisan weavers and cradle of the poncho from Salta, where the mountains and the beauty of the Valley are witnesses of the incredible presence of the Calchaquí culture.

Charming town
It is located in the very center of the Calchaquí Valley, southwest of the city of Salta, 150 km away (taking PR 33 and PR 42); or 184 km by PR 33 and NR 40. Although there are no known records of its founding date, it is estimated that its origins date back to the late eighteenth century, and its original use was as a Hacienda-Oratory. Along the main street there are adobe houses with galleries and large patios with architectural details that give the place an old and fresh air. Its irregular layout gives this place a particular charm.

Seclantás, a Magical Place
Its "magical value" lies in the fact that it is the place where the poncho of Salta is traditionally woven, a garment that symbolizes the history and tradition of the people of Salta. The program will invest in the enhancement of the ancestral loom textile handicraft work through interventions that will create an open-air interpretative museum that will also enhance the singularities of the Vallisto people and the "Camino de los Artesanos" (Artisans' Road) located on Provincial Route No. 55. Seclanteños weavers have been recognized with national awards and distinguished as "Master Artisans" by the Government of the Province of Salta.

Seclantás, cradle of the "Poncho salteño".
Seclantás, "Cradle of the Poncho Salteño", is a prodigal land of artisan weavers and is one of the few regions that still preserves the ancestral technique of weaving on a loom, where the main local garment par excellence is the Poncho of our Maximum Gaucho Hero, Martín Miguel de Güemes.

La Junta Square
It surprises for its tall palm trees, ancestral molles and many other plants that give greenery all year round. It is the ideal place to start the tour and learn more about Seclantás. It is called Plaza La Junta, because it was in this place where the First Vallista Junta was convened in 1814, to go to help Belgrano in the Battle of Vilcapugio and Ayohuma in Tucumán; it is for this reason that Seclantás was declared a "National Historic Site" on February 18, 1975.

An unmissable landscape in Seclantás
About 20 kilometers from the town there are sandstone formations that stand out for their reddish colors. It is a great adventure to get there: a stretch in 4x4 and then on foot to reach the pink, red and ocher colored cordon that becomes a kind of natural labyrinth. Advancing in the walk, the river canyon narrows and through narrow tunnels you reach the caves or reddish vaults, where the daylight is outside and inside you can appreciate an exotic and wonderful geography.

Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church
An unmissable postcard of the town is the Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church, built in 1835, with its colonial and post-colonial architecture with details of other influences. It is elevated in a preferential place and presents in its interior an extraordinary handling of color, which makes this work, one of the best exponents of the vallisto popular art.

Cemetery Chapel
From here you can get a good view of the town and visit the mausoleum chapel of the Diaz family, built in 1885 with an Italianate architectural style unique in the Calchaquí Valleys and declared a Provincial Monument. Its main attraction is the painting inside, all handmade in charcoal.

Hill of the Way of the Cross
Near the cemetery you can access to a path or via crucis that surprises for the landscape that is crossed. From the last station you can get an incredible view of the access to the town, the Calchaquí river and the mountain ranges of Molinos, Luracatao and Brealito.

Artisans' Road
The artisans' road, located in El Colte, is an alternative road parallel to National Route No. 40, where you can find artisans weaving on carob tree looms. The artisans invite visitors to their homes to see live and direct their magnificent works, such as blankets, fabrics, ponchos, tapestries, blankets, ruanas, saddlebags and sashes.

Artisans and handicrafts
Seclantás is known as the "cradle of the poncho salteño" because there are some of the most renowned artisans in Salta. The Poncho Seclanteño is coveted nationally and internationally; figures of our folk music as the Chalchaleros, El Chaqueño Palavecino, Jorge Rojas, Zamba Quipildor, the late Ariel Petrocelli, among others came to this town to acquire this beautiful garment, provincial emblem. In the month of June, Seclantás is invaded by gauchos from different groups of the Province of Salta, who come looking for the most exquisite garment woven in ancestral loom to wear with unwavering pride in the main parade to General Güemes.  The work of the seclanteño textile artisan, has been immortalized in the lyrics of great artists such as: El Chaqueño Palavecino in a recited "I am the Poncho in Seclantás", where he describes the popular knowledge of every corner of Salta. Or as recommended by Los Chalchaleros in their song "Poncho Seclanteño"..... "pa' mingar un lindo poncho, vaya a Seclantás....tejido por el tiempo y su soledad....este poncho que tenemos es de Seclantás". Also, great artists such as Los Nocheros emphasize the craftsmanship of the place in their song "Cantando Salta"... "Me abriga el poncho llegando a Seclantás, y bagualas canta mi alma" (My soul sings bagualas). The raw material used in the realization of the different garments is the wool of llamas, sheep. To make a poncho, the artisans take between 15 to 20 days.

A lagoon in the middle of the mountain landscape
The beautiful lagoon of Brealito, at more than 2,000 meters above sea level, changes colors according to the sunlight, sometimes blue, sometimes green; those who visit it experience a special energy. There are silversides and flamingos that coexist in this magnificent water mirror of volcanic origin, in the middle of incredible cardonales. The legends of monsters, the woman who dances and the best known, the legend of the mermaid, give a certain mystical air to this place.
