Virgen de la Peña

In the Virgen de la Peña Sanctuary, the Franciscans followed one another from the missionary center of Tartagal to the present day.

Devotion to the Virgin of La Peña arose in the first years of the 20th century and according to popular belief, the Little Mother of La Peña appeared among the hills, flowers and mosses of the Tartagalense mountains, in the place called Yariguarenda or Santa María de Yariguarenda, thus giving birth to the devotion to the Virgen de la Peña. This Sanctuary celebrates her main festival on the third Sunday of August and, on December 8, “the Virgin comes down from the hill to visit her children from Tartagal.

Lord of Sumalao

The Sanctuary, also called the Humilladero, was a place of penance, a site of our intangible heritage that has been alive since the year 1700 (when its tradition arose) and the Vice Parish of the Lord of Vilque was created in 1773, as it is a place of worship and oral tradition where its two annual patron saint festivals are celebrated in the month of May, the Fiesta Chica and the Fiesta Grande; and every first and third Sunday of each month the Sanctuary commemorates them.

A place of permanent devotion in the Lerma Valley, it can be visited on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month.

Perpetuo Socorro y San Alfonso

The sanctuary of Our Lady of Perpetuo Socorro and San Alfonso is a Catholic temple located a few blocks from the historic center. It was built from 1908 to 1911 mainly to house the replica of the Virgin of Perpetuo Socorro, which had been brought a few years earlier from Europe.
