Train to the Clouds

EXPERIENCIAS

The Train to the Clouds is more than just a train.

The famous Train to the Clouds
The train opens the sky to its passengers and transmits in the immensity of the landscape an endless number of sensations: amazement and stillness, contrasting colors and of course the experience of a unique national icon where the magic reaches 4,220 meters above sea level in the region of the Puna Salta. This experience combines routes by road and rail, where you can enjoy the landscapes and Andean culture and at the same time benefit the local and touristic development of the Quebrada del Toro and Puna regions. This tour has as an exclusive attraction the ascent by train from San Antonio de los Cobres to the famous Viaducto La Polvorilla.

Two in one: road and railroad
It is a unique and special trip that combines its services in two sections: National Route N°51, with photographic stops at panoramic points, to then embark on the magical experience of the Train to the Clouds, which is manifested in all its splendor upon arrival at the imposing viaduct. Not only landscapes and sensations are combined, but also stories and experiences that lead to relive the epic of the railway construction, back in 1920, initiated by the engineer Richard Fontain Maury, alma mater of the project. This tour also allows visitors to visit villages that have been frozen in time in harmonious coexistence with the mountains.

Campo Quijano
It combines tradition, landscape and land of gauchos. It is located 30 km from the city of Salta in the anteroom of the route and natural path that leads to the Puna region. This town called "Portal de los Andes" welcomes the visitor with the first descent of the excursion in a historical reference about the most emblematic engineering work of Salta: the C-14 railway branch.

El Alfarcito
It is located at 2,800 meters above sea level. You can visit the picturesque chapel, where the patron saint is San Cayetano. The families live on handicrafts and have a subsistence economy based on agriculture and raising goats and sheep, hares, guanacos, vizcachas, donkeys and horses. For some years there has been an Ecclesial Center for training, production, tourism and handicrafts, encouraged by the missionary Sigfrido "Chifri" Moroder, who together with a team of people sought to promote the development of the inhabitants of the hills of the department of Rosario de Lerma, as a valid option before the chronic emigration to indigent shantytowns of the cities. This place offers a country breakfast service with local products made by the communities of the area.

San Antonio de los Cobres
It is the transfer point of this experience; there, the contingent is transferred to the Train Station where travelers board the Train to the Clouds that takes them to the Viaduct La Polvorilla. The trip takes one hour to the viaduct, at 4,200 meters above sea level, where we cross the most impressive engineering work of the last century.
century. After 30 minutes we start the return to San Antonio de los Cobres where passengers board the buses to return to the city of Salta.

Santa Rosa de Tastil
On the way back, a last stop is made in Santa Rosa de Tastil, an area of influence of the Qhapaq Ñan in the Province of Salta and administrative center of the Quebrada del Toro. There you can visit the Site Museum, which exhibits pieces and objects belonging to the archaeological site located at the top of the hill, very close to the present town. The archaeological site is one of the largest in our country, it is estimated that it housed approximately 3,000 people. You can also buy different handicrafts and local products at the Artisans Center of the community. After the visit, the return trip continues to the capital of Salta.
